MeteoSwiss monitors and documents the quality of its public weather forecasts with the COMFORT score. In May 2021 the forecasting system producing the public weather forecasts was fully automated. A significant drop in forecast quality as measured by the COMFORT headline score was observed in the aftermath of this change. In this report, we document the changes to the forecasting system, the ensuing score degradation and the measures taken to mitigate the adverse impact. With all the modifications in place, the scores are now better than before the change in 2021. We conclude by collecting the lessons learned and by sketching how the score might evolve in the coming years.
