COSMO Products

COSMO-2, with a mesh size of 2.2 km, and 8 daily forecasts (every 3 hours starting at 00, 03, 06, ... , 21 UTC) to 33 hours, from 03 UTC up to 45 hours. Delivery of data at 02, 05, 08, ... , 23 UTC.

COSMO-7, with a mesh size of 6.6 km, and 3 predictions per day (00, 06, and 12 UTC) up to 72 hours. Delivery of data at 02:30, 08:30, and 14:30 UTC.

Graphics of the current predictions from COSMO-7 for precipitation, surface pressure and temperature, and COSMO-2 for wind over the lake, gusts and the zero degree-degree limit are available as examples.

In the e-Shop, graphics and animation of wind and precipitation (3 -, 6 - and 24-hour totals) are available. Products from COSMO-7 will be updated twice, those of COSMO-2 eight times per daily.

On the entire domain of COSMO-2 and COSMO-7, all relevant meteorological variables are extracted and available on demand. The parameters are temperature, humidity, precipitation, wind, global radiation and many more.
The operational data is delivered via email or onto an FTP server.

Four predefined types of forecast products are available to the user:

1. Tables (formats: XML, CSV or ASCII) with all the important whether elements at any location (or several) on the model domain (e.g. for directly use in a control system). At the locations with available observations, we can deliver the best possible temperature and moisture predictions using a Kalman filter. 2. Horizontal fields (formats: graphics, GRIB binary or ASCII format) across the entire model domain, or on pre-defined excerpts (Alps, Switzerland, or regions within Switzerland)

3. Vertical profiles of temperature, humidity and wind at any location.

4. Animation of predicted hourly precipitation, maximum wind gusts, etc.

COSMO-LEPS, with a mesh width of 7 km, is initialized twice a day  (at 00 UTC and 12 UTC) with 16 different forecast variants (the "members") up to 132 hours in advance. This allows probabilistic predictions for certain events. Delivery of data every day at 11 UTC and 23 UTC.

Graphics of the current predictions from COSMO-LEPS as "Meteograms" and as a probability of precipitation over the model domain are available on the forecast page.

The e-Shop contains plots & animations of the probability of precipitation, snow and wind gusts over Switzerland and the Alps. Products from COSMO-LEPS are updated daily.


Three pre-defined types of forecast products:

At locations with observations, we can deliver the best possible prediction for the temperature and moisture using a Kalman filter algorithm. The products are available as probability forecasts or predictions of the 16 different "members".

2. Horizontal fields (formats: graphics, GRIB binary or ASCII format) of 2m-temperature (max and min), global radiation, 10m-wind and precipitation forecasts over Switzerland or the Alps are available as probabilities or as forecasts for each of the 16 members.
